  1. “INSIGHT”
    By Roque J. Ferriols, SJ.
The purpose of Philosophy is not to teach us what philosophy is but to try to give us a chance to philosophize. Like all activities, philosophizing is something which is easier to do than to define. Most of us associate philosophy with thinking. A crucial element in thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeing with the mind. A good example is seeing the point of a joke. There are two things to be considered with regard to an insight: the insight itself and what to do with the insight. The second item is vague. It is something to do with the analysis of the insight however, analysis can kill the enjoyment. But if we are going to deliver the joke to others, analysis can deepen and clarify the original insight and so help towards a more effective delivery.
Another is to crystallize our insight in a metaphor. The metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind. Also, one portion of reality casts light on another.
Let us take this example: the insight into the meaning of the number four. The insight is so clear that it seems nothing can be done with it. However, just to push a point, one can say that the meaning of four can be analyzed into two and two or into one and one and one and one. And we can see that these analysis do somewhat make clearer the already insight into the meaning of four. Now, how did we gain this insight into the meaning of the number four? The usual answer is by counting. Say you have here a Toyopet, a Mercedes Benz, an Impala and a Volkswagen. Note that you have to look them in a special way if you want to count until four. Abstraction is involved here. We abstract when we concentrate on one aspect of a thing while prescinding from its other aspect. We prescind when we neither affirm nor deny, we merely disregard. We must not only abstract from certain aspects of the things we count, but in the end we have to abstract from the things themselves. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis.
Sometimes conceptual analysis can desiccate an insight. That is why it is necessary after conceptual analysis to return to the concrete fullness of the original insight, which can deepen and vitalize insight.
From here, we gained some insight into the nature of insight: it is a kind of seeing, not without eyes but with our power of thinking. We may used conceptual analysis and metaphor for doing something with an insight; we may explore insights in many ways and along different levels ; insight permeates the process of doing something with an insight; and certain insights resists all efforts to explore them completely because these insights bring us into the very heart of reality and reality is superabundantly rich. The richness of these insights then is the richness of the reality itself. And the stance of a human being facing reality has always to be a tension of knowledge and a sense of ignorance.

  2. INSIGHT

Insight is seeing into a situation. Insight is a kind of seeing not with eyes but with our powers of thinking.

Boy: Nagkukwentuhan kami ng nakakatakot, sama ka?
    Girl: Sige!
Boy: Alam nyo ba kung sinu-sino tatakbong presidente sa 2004? Si Gloria, si Ping, si Danding at si FPJ!!!
    (from Pugad Baboy 17)

An insight is a kind of seeing with the mind. The given example is a joke. When somebody gives a joke and you see the point and laugh, then you have insight on that.

Two things should be considered with regard to an insight: The insight itself and what to do with the insight. An insight comes into your mind. You see the point of something. But using that point or knowing what to do with the point is harder than the first consideration.

An example is given. Juan is standing beside his grandfather’s coffin and is looking at his old man’s photos. Juan realizes that a man starts with having energy and high spirits and then eventually that high spirits ceases then a man will reach death. But before he reaches death he’ll have his son to pass his energy and high spirits to. What can Juan do with his insight? He can make a metaphor. He can use something to describe his insight. This first technique, metaphor, sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind.

Another example is the number four. It can be assumed that it is two and two or; one and one and one and one or; even one and three. We come up with these analyses by counting. A supporting example is, say we have four cars. Say you have two Toyopets, Mercedez Benz, and a Volkswagen. If you see them as cars, they are four. But if you see them from a brand’s viewpoint, say the Toyopet viewpoint, you can just count two. This is the other technique Juan can do. This is called abstraction/ conceptual analysis.

Abstraction is concentrating on one aspect of a thing while prescinding from its other aspects. The example we had consists of two abstractions. First abstraction: It is not four cars but just four. Second abstraction is that we have two Toyopets, a Mercedez Benz, and a Volkswagen.

An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis.

With the Juan example, because of the fact that we can have tumultuous generations of men, it can become an abstract fund of energy and high spirits. This can blur the idea we had. We should return to our original idea to clear things up.

A person can also use a myth as another technique. He can have many ways of doing something with an insight. But sometimes, the original insight remains the best. We should note that insight permeates the process of doing something with an insight. We need insight to see the insight within what we have done to the original insight. We should also note that there are certain insights which resist exploration. We can conclude from that that the insights are already showing the reality and have its entire richness.

"The purpose of Logic is not to define something, but rather to analyze, criticize and philosophize."

The topic gives us the chance to think. An element of thinking is insight, which gives us the imaginative power to see into and understand immediately a situation or a person. One example is seeing the point of a joke. A person who laugh gets the point of the joke, but if a person is bewilder, he should analyze and think critical before seeing the point.

There are two things that should be consider when we talk about insight; the insight itself and what to do with the insoght.

Another example that was given is Juan's grandfather who past away. The dead, during his youth was young and energetic and has made a significant impact on the ladies. Juan is full of vigor and popular with the ladies like his granfather. Then Juan relaize, his grandfather was invigorated during his youth but later drained and so as Juan. By this time Juan is nourished with energy but when he became old, this energy had worn-out and later he will become the member of the dead. Another insight that Juan had made is the rise and fall of in the life of the generation of men. He can also compare this to metaphor, in which a name or quality is attributed to something to which it is not literally applicable. He can compare this into a leaf, but one must not look to the physical quality of the leaf. One must think deeply to compare the leaves with the rise and fall of man.Leaves become dry and the eventual germination of another, like men, some have the energy when they are young but others have lost this power when they become old.

One tool in the analysis of insight is abstraction. An abstract thought is called a concept analysis. Abstraction is considered apart the other from the perception or any concrete object.

An example is the meaning of number FOUR. We can count four cars and four animals to arrive at four. The physical appearance of the cars and the animals are disregarded because our focus only is to arrive in the meaning of four. Here we can say that we must not only abstract from certain aspect of the things we count, but in the end we have to abstract from the things themselves.

One have learned that insight is not just only seeing with the use of our eyes and the other sense perception but also the real meaning behind things because we think. Conceptual analysis and metaphor are two of the techniques for doing something with insight. Some insight portrays many meanings so we are not able to clarify all of them, that we come to overestimate this insight. This helps us to be keenly aaware of it's superabundance. Last, insight gives us a better and a deeper understanding of the things around us. Remember that every human faces a sense of knowledge and sense of ignorance.

  5. MY INSIGHTS ( Julius A. Dela Cruz)

In my insights about the first page of the handouts, the example given is very useful on how we can think critically. I’m sure others will not laugh if they heard that kind of joke. They will call it corny but if we examine the situation, we will understand it and convey its meaning. The study of Philosophy will help us to think in a critical way. Not only on the way have we thought but also to take actions according to the situation. It focuses more on the deeper sense of a given subject rather than its external environment.

On the next page there is a given situation that only shows the same outcome. It’s the story of Juan. He believes that like other generation man lives with full of energy and vigor. And that thinking keeps in his mind like his grandfather used to tell to him. From this example, we can say that it’s true that man lives with full of high spirits and enthusiasm but after many years that spirit will fall. But applying philosophy in life can make our life more colorful than what we think will happen in the future. Philosophy will help us to clarify this situation and give different ideas and insights.

The third example is about the word number. The example is the different cars. If we saw them we actually end to say our views and said “ apat na kotse un”. Yes it’s four already in counting but if we look at it one’s viewpoint it’s only one. That’s how abstraction affects our reasoning and insights. We are too focusing on one aspect of a given subject and we sometimes end on wrong conclusions.

We have many different views and insights on a particular subject. It can be same or not still we keep thinking and prove our views. That why we need to study philosophy in able to philosophize with others to clarify our ideas and to choose the right decision before we take our actions.

    INSIGHT

Philosophy as a course is not just knowing its definition but using it as a guide for our daily life. We should get the importance of it once we study it and pay more attention on it. We should apply all the knowledge that we will get from this study because it will help us in making a good decision or choice for our own sake.

Insight is our ability to see clearly the nature of a complex person, situation or subject. We should not just focus on the words but more on the message that it gives. We should have a metaphysical uneasiness characteristic to see what is obvious.

There are two things we should consider with regard to insight: (1) the insight itself and (2) what I do with the insight.

In the first example, some people used jokes with insight. If you analyzed it you will get the point of the joke and if not maybe you didn’t get it. Let me give an example, Jose asked you if you want to see a monster and you said yes. Then, after you answer he gave you a mirror placing it in your face. Well that simply means that you are the monster that he talked about. In this case, you should see the insight from point of the action and words of a person.

You can also make an insight through the use of metaphors. Metaphor is a word or phrase that do not directly mean literally but it expresses or symbolizes something. For example, you said somebody is a snake, it does not literally means that that person is a snake or an animal but it expresses or symbolizes that he is a dishonest and unreliable person. Through the use of metaphors, it helps us to understand more the meaning or symbol of some word that will sharpens our knowledge.

An insight permeates the process of doing something with an insight. An example is the insight to the meaning of the number four. Well, for me, it means two and two; one and one and one and one; or three and one. For example, there are four cars Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Impala and Volkswagen. There are four if we are talking of cars but if we become more specific and we talk of Volvo, it is one count only. At this point we used the Conceptual Analysis.

Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insights. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis.

I believe that not all we see are real so it is better if we analyze it first.

    INSIGHT

At first I have no idea about insight, all I know is that it is part of thinking, so I try to find the meaning of it in the dictionary and it states that “insight is a clear perception or understanding of the nature of a thing.” It is crucial element of thinking as described in the context “insight by Roque Ferriols S. J.
Joking had become one of the past time of Filipinos, we always want to hear one at least once a day. One of today’s famous jokes is the knock-knock that always makes us laugh. Some of us always want to give a joke but not all are being entertained by the viewers/ listeners especially if you are one of the corny jokers. I always thought that the corny jokers point is pointless because it is too obvious. I didn’t know that insight has something to do with jokes and that insight is like seeing the point of a joke. Joke is truly funny not unless it is a corny one but it doesn’t end with that, jokes are not only uttered just to make us laugh but for us to get its point and try to laugh for it.
We are always conscious of everything and we always try to analyze it and we always have corresponding questions for it. Insight has also something to do with it. Metaphor is one of the two techniques of insight, in the dictionary it is an implied comparison between two unlike things that actually have something important in common. The insight of Juan about the rise and fall of the generation of man which is closely related to Homer’s insight in his epic Iliad in which he uses metaphor to associate the falling leaves with the death and the man and the new leaves at the time of spring to the birth of new generation of man. Although different from each other it serves as a mean for us to see the nature of life and to have clearer picture of it for our better understanding.
As one of my teachers explains to us that the numbers that we see I the board formulas and even in the pages of the books are just only a graphical representation of its abstract quality wherein they are not actually occurring in our daily lives. Love, hatred, and fear are also an abstract; even though they are abstract they can be shown through the use of our body actions. I was fascinated that it is also one of the techniques of insight the abstraction shows us the clear perception to that thing although it is very dangerous technique.
Insight gives us a better picture of a thing not through the use of our sense of sight “the eyes” but the power of thinking that develops those images to a colored one with full of details and a clear cut of it.

    A review
I must first analyze the “truths” about the subject matter in order for us to better understand the concept being portrayed in this piece. The wholeness of this review had shown points about what the true meaning of Philosophy is. It gave an overview on how things are interpreted in the most bizarre manner that defied the standards in thinking it. The first thing to be discussed is the focus where its parts will be rooted by the next set of ideas that might be the root of the next. This said focus is what they called Philosophy and to better understand it, we must first know what it is, and what it is all about.
Philosophy is not something we can define and give a standard meaning. It has its own “life”, in the sense that no one can understand everything about its wholeness and that no one can fully grasp the things that are involved for the reason that it reproduce by itself. Philosophy can be treated as the source of every known knowledge in this existence. After a certain person had discovered something, that won’t stop because of the man’s curiosity of every dimensions of that discovery. That curiosity came from their own beliefs that we called insight. People might not realize that they are philosophizing once they had their own insights or own way of seeing and interpreting things that they had noticed about these said things.
To break-down what these dimensions of seeing things gone, these points are mentioned.
    • The first point is the use of metaphor or giving comparison between two unrelated objects that may be said to “bringing non-existing alikeness to existence”.
    • The second point is the use of abstraction or conceptual analysis. This point is very difficult because unless you have the same way of thinking with the sender of the message you may have difficulties in interpreting what he/she is trying to portray. It is the use of imagination that will give meaning to the message by some given clues hidden within and behind the words in it.
    • The third point is the use of contemplation or deep thinking after the thought that you gain from the first time you did it. It is how you could come up to something that never had been said but somehow related to the idea because of the given thoughts that may be caused by symbolisms and resemblance.
    • The final point is the use of reality and reality-based insights. It is knowing what is really happening in the real life and the most likely to be experienced while living right at this very moment in the world.

The whole thing tells about how insight is something that is profound when you go to analyze something deeper. An insight is a clear perception of something. It is a kind of seeing with the mind. One vital aspect of insight is thinking. It involves thinking about the things beyond its literal meaning. It helps people develop creative ideas and improve one’s mind critically.
“Sometimes being blind enables you to see better than those who have sight. People, who can see, often don't.” - This simple quotation represents how insights are sometimes hard to see which is common to few people. For instance, you present a joke to someone yet the person didn’t see the point behind it.
The simple insight is involving at least two abstractions. Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insight. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis. One dangers of conceptual analysis is it can desiccate an insight that’s why it is necessary after conceptual analysis to return to the concrete fullness of the original insight. When this return to the concrete is made, can deepen and vitalize insight.
We have gained some insight into the nature of insight. It is kind of seeing, not without eyes but with the powers of thinking. When we want to clarify and deepen an insight or to fix it in our minds, we “do something” with it. The fact that there are many ways of doing something with an insight shows that certain insights are so rich that they cannot be exhausted by our efforts to clarify them. We may explore them in many ways and along different levels, but some superabundance of the original insights always remains beyond the reach of our techniques.
To have insights is very essential. It forms the pool of beliefs and principles that shapes a person’s behavior. Our perception of the things and events that happen around us helps us learn. But whether we accept this learning or not is a matter of choice. Like a student attending class, he is presented with a choice of listening to the discussion and developing insights about the topic or simply ignores the discussion. These choices a person has to make. He will not learn if he will not think of the same way as he won’t find if he does not seek. Forming an insight is one step towards knowledge and one step away from ignorance. Intelligence is very important especially now that education has evolved from being a privilege for the rich before to basic necessity that is essential for every person today. Knowledge sheds light to a brighter future. It opens opportunities for a better life; ignorance darkens the path that a person is taking. Therefore it is safe to say that for a person to have a good future he has to think and form insights about the reality that surrounds him. What he will learn will shape his personality thereby defining him as an individual who is unique with sets of attitudes and beliefs shaped by the very insights he has formed and acquired.

Philosophy is more on thinking. It enhances our mind. It is something that our eyes cannot see but our thinking. A crucial element of thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeking with mind or it is seeing into something more than what meets the eye or it can be said as "seeing with the mind". An insight is understanding. A good example is seeking the point of a joke. When you laugh, you see the point.
Two things should be considered with regard to an insight are the insight itself and what I do with the insight. An insight is understanding and comes in our mind.
Another example: Juan I standing beside the coffin of his grandfather who has just died at the age of ninety-five. And Juan sees his grandfather’s memoirs that he realized they have the same full of high spirits, dashing and quite popular. He also realizes the generation of men that man begin having high energy and high spirits but it will be gone when you old and eventually when man reach death. Juan do with his insight that he can crystallize it n a metaphor. The metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind.
Another example is the meaning of number four. We can analyze the meaning of four into two and two or into one and one and one. We can get it by counting. Another approach that we count four cars, a Toyopet, a Mercedes Benz, an Impala and a Volkswagen. We can count them by four as cars not in the brand of the cars. But if look on them from the Toyopet viewpoint, you can only can one. And abstraction is involved here. Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insights. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis. And abstraction is called conceptual analysis.
In relation with Juan’s Example, The generation of men begins life with a fund of energy and high spirits which seems never-ending. But sooner or later the fund exhausts itself. This is in his insight. The throbbing, tumultuous generations of men become an abstract fund of energy and high spirits. That why’s we need conceptual analysis, to return to the concrete fullness of the original insight to become clearer.
Insight is a kind if seeking, not without eyes but with our powers of thinking. When we want to clarify and deepen an insight or to fix it in our minds, we “do something”. There are two techniques for it the metaphor and conceptual analysis. And we can also use myth techniques. We are many ways of doing something in our insight that shows that certain insights are so rich. But we believed that the original insight is best. This kind puts us into a state of tension between a sense of knowledge and light and a sense of ignorance and darkness. But we should note that insight permeates the process of doing something with an insight. We need insight to see whether a given conceptual analysis of a given insight to look into deeply in to it instead of merely classifying its superficial aspects.

    Insight

When we philosophize we use our thinking. The crucial element in thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeing with the mind. A good example is seeing the point of a joke. A friend gives a joke. You see the point and you laugh. There are two things should be considered with regard to an insight: First is The insight itself and second What I do with the insight. The second one is a vague. It will become clearer as we go along. What can I do with my insight into a joke? I can analyze it. After the analysis you will discover the point of the joke.
Let’s take another example. Juan grandfather died. He hears from an old maiden aunts that his grandfather is full vigor, high spirits and quite popular in ladies during the revolution. Then Juan begins to think more deeply. He is full of high spirits and quite popular to girls now. Juan thought that is the way of generation of men. They start life full of vigor and high spirits then wither away and die. Juan has an insight into the rhythm of rise and fall in the life of the generations of men. He can crystallize in it a metaphor. The metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind.
Another example is a four, for instance lets have a Toyopet, a Mercedes Benz , an Impala and a Volkswagen. If you look on them from Toyopet viewpoint, you can only count one. Abstraction is involved here. We abstract when we concentrate on one aspect of a thing while preceding from its other aspects. Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insights. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis. We have seen two techniques for doing something with an insight: conceptual analysis and metaphor. But also other techniques can be used.

Philosophy is more on thinking. A crucial element in thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeing with the mind not with the obvious physical features of a thing. A good example is seeing the point of a joke.
    Take this example:
    Knock. Knock.
    Who’s there?
    Violet.
    Violet who?
Nahulog ba ung cellphone mo sa bowl? Don’t worry I’ll violet.
When a friend gives you this joke and you see the point, you will laugh then you have the insight on that. But if you don’t see the point you might be confused and ask your friend to repeat the joke again.
There are two things to be considered with regard to an insight: the insight itself and what to do with the insight. But knowing what to do with an insight is hard because it involves analysis which will kill your enjoyment about the joke. But if you will deliver that joke to others, analysis can deepen and clarify your original insight and will help towards a more effective delivery.
Another example is given: Juan is standing beside the coffin of his grandfather. Juan sees his grandfather as young and full of vigor and high spirits. Then Juan concluded, the generation of men start their life with full of vigor and high spirits then wither away and die. But before they die there comes again a new born generation who also begin with full of vigor and high spirits. Juan has an insight about the rise and fall of the generation of men. What can Juan do with this insight? He can make a metaphor which sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind.
Another example again is given: the insight into the meaning of the number four. If we analyze it, we can say that it is two and two or; one and one and two. We come up with these by mathematical analyses. But if we analyze into another approach, say we have four cars, a Toyopet, a Mercedez Benz, an Impala, and a Volkswagen. Looking at it as a car, they are also four. But if you will look on them from the Toyopet viewpoint, you can only count one. This is another way of doing with an insight, abstraction or conceptual abstraction.
Abstraction involves concentrating on one aspect of a thing while prescinding from its other aspects. It is also one of the tools often used in the analysis of insights.
From our brief survey of insight, we have gained some insight into the nature of insight. It is a kind of seeing, not without eyes but with our powers of thinking. When we want to clarify and deepen an insight, we “do something” with it. The two techniques for doing something with an insight are conceptual analysis and metaphor.
Insight also brings us into the very heart of reality and reality is superabundantly rich. The richness of these insights then is the richness of reality itself. And the stance of a human being facing reality has always to be a tension between a sense of knowledge and sense of ignorance.
So let us enjoy analyzing our insights.

    "INSIGHT"
    (A Summary)

In our daily life, we always use our intelligence and powers of thinking, and the crucial element of thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeing with the mind: this means that one sees into something more than what meets the eye. We also have two things to be considered regarding an insight: 1) the insight itself, and, 2) what I do with the insight.
To better understand these two considerations, we have here the three examples:

First is a friend asking a joke of saying "Mary Rose" and "Me Relos" which sound very different, yet they made to sound alike. For the listeners to get the point of his joke, he made to follow it with "Anong Oras" which pertains to the one asking for a time. One can analyze the joke and merely enjoy it by an effective delivery of a speaker.

The second example is Juan who suddenly realized during the death of his grandfather that he is a new generation of having a high spirits, dashing, and quiet popular with the ladies. Those are the characteristics of his grandfather according to his old maiden aunts. Juan can crystallize his insight into a metaphor that can sharpen the insight and fixes it in the mind. From Homer's view of crystallizing the image of the leaves, here comes the understanding of the rising and falling rhythm of the generations of men.

The third example is taking the different meaning of number four not just by counting but with use of abstraction. We abstract when we concentrate on one aspect of a thing like counting two cars which are different from the other two cars, or the counting of the two carabaos from the two dogs. But if we refer to a car whatever the types, or the animals of whatever kind, we definitely count them as four.

Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insight. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis.

The following are the points of brief survey of insight:
    1. it is a kind of seeing, not without eyes but with powers of thinking.
    2. insights are so rich that they cannot be exhausted by our efforts to clarify them.
    3. insight permits the process of doing something with an insight.
    4. one resists his efforts to completely explore insights because insights bring us into the very heart of reality.

Through insight, man can see and can notice the things around him, think and ponder on these, and can able to act on his own reflections.

    Insight

It must first need to analyze what is the thought portrayed in this article to better understand the concept. The entire article interprets the true meaning of philosophy. It gives an idea how philosophy is related on different things in our life. Philosophy is more on using our thinking. A crucial element in thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeing with the mind. A good example of this is a joke gave by our friends. When we analyze the joke and get the point of it and laugh, then there is philosophy happen because we used our thinking to get the point of the joke. There are two things should be considered with regard to an insight, first is the insight itself and second what I do with the insight. We will give focus on the second one as we go along to better understand this article. The point is after we think and analyze the joke, we will discover the point of it.

Another example is Juan standing beside the coffin of his grandfather. His old maiden aunt tells him that his grandfather is full of vigor, high spirit and quite popular in ladies during the revolution period. Juan thinks deeply and he realized that he and his grandfather are the same when his grandfather was young. He knew that the generation of man starts the life with full of vigor and high spirits and then wither away and die after they have given life to their own son. He can crystallize it in a metaphor. He compare his life to his grandfather. The metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in mind.

Let’s take other example the number four. for instance lets have a Toyopet, a Mercedes Benz , an Impala and a Volkswagen.
The main point of this article is to tells us that philosophy is really happen in real life. All the things and happenings in our life always involved philosophy.

    INSIGHT
    (A Summary)

Thinking is a nature to man. However, we do not simply think and think and think, of course we associate insights to it. Insight is a kind of seeing with the mind; meaning, it is the ability to see clearly and intuitively into the nature of a complex person, situation, or subject. A good example is seeing the point of a joke. Some may see its point and others may not.

    Take this example:
    *CONCLUSION* and *OPINION*
Paano ko makakapasok sa pinto conclusion?
Eh kanina kasi nung tinangnan ko opinion.

The two things to consider with regard to an insight are (1) the insight itself (2) what I do with the insight.

As regards to the example above, what you should do with the insight that was formed is to analyze the joke but if your only concern is to enjoy the joke, then intense analysis can kill your enjoyment. But if you deliver it to others, analysis can deepen and clarify your original insight and so help towards a more effective delivery.

The second example is Juan’s insight regarding the rhythm of rise and fall in the life of the generations of man. They started full of vigor and high spirits then they wither and die. But not before they have left behind sons who also begin full of vigor and high spirits then wither away and die after they have given life to their own sons. He can develop it in a metaphor – the fall and return of leaves. This metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind.

Another example is the insight into the meaning of the number four. Obviously, it can be two and two or into one and one and one and one. Nevertheless, using the conceptual analysis or analysis by abstraction, we abstract when we concentrate on one aspect of a thing while prescinding from its other aspects. Counting two dogs and two carabaos will result to four but if you look from the dog viewpoint, you can only count two.

There are dangers to the use of conceptual analysis – it can shrink an insight. With regard to Juan’s insight; the hammering and unrestrained generations of men become an abstract fund of energy and high spirits. That is why it is necessary after conceptual analysis, to return to the concrete fullness of the original insight.

Insights into the nature of insight:
    1. Insight is a kind of seeing with our powers of thinking.
    2. Insights are so rich that they cannot be exhausted by our efforts to clarify them.
    3. Insight permeates the process of doing something with an insight.
    4. Insight brings us into the very heart of reality and reality is superabundantly rich.

    "INSIGHT"

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “INSIGHT”?? For me, it is the seeing things in different ways and makes use of our power of thinking and reasoning in reacting for a certain situation in a deeper sense. It is said to be the crucial element in thinking. Insight can be used with several related meanings:
    •a piece of information
•the act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or of seeing intuitively in Greek called noesis
    •an introspection
•the power of acute observation and deduction, penetration, discernment, perception called intellection or noesis
•an understanding based on identification of relationships and behaviors within a model, context, or scenario

An insight is use in understanding how to solve a difficult problem or even just a simple joke. The article “Insight” by Roque J. Ferriols, S.J. gave examples of how we fully understand the meaning of insight.

The first example was like this:
Student: Ano sa tagalong ang wheelchair??
    Sir Al: hmmm.. Ano??
    Student: E di SALUMPO! (hahaha!)
When you see the meaning behind this joke then you have an insight on that.

Second example was a story of Juan standing beside the coffin of his grandfather and realized that he is a new generation of having a high spirits, dashing, and quiet popular with the ladies.

Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insight. We can say that it is two and two or; one and one and two.

Now we’ve learned that insight is “understanding as the ability to sense, or know something, immediately".

After I read the whole article, I realized that it focuses on a person's insight. A person's ability to see things with the mind or seeing things intuitively. Knowing the point of something that is said or something that you have seen or experienced with someone. Like the example of delivering a joke. If you don't analyze it deeply, then you won't be able to understand it, might as well be ignorant.

One way of crystallizing your insight is by using metaphor. Comparing the things you experienced with another object or situation, so that it would be more clearly understood by you. Like in the case of Juan, he compared the life and death of people to the fall and return of leaves. By comparing the two situations, we are able to identify their true meaning. Another example is the insight in the meaning of four (4). We must remember to look at something as a whole. Count the things as ease as they were the same, not individually. Don't look at them at one aspect only.

From the examples given, we can gain insights into the nature of “insight”. First, see things not with your eyes only, but with your mind or your power of thinking. Not thinking of what it is, but thinking of what you can do on it. Second, doing something has also an effect. It puts you into a state of tension between sense of knowledge and light and sense of ignorance and darkness. Third, we need insight to see that the contemplation leads to the deeper understanding and realization on the death and birth of generations. We need an insight to know the real essence of a thing not only the obvious aspects of it. Lastly, exploring he world of insights leads us to the world of reality. Richness in insights is equal to richness in reality.

To top it all, knowing insight depends on a person's ability to comprehend things and their state of ignorance or non-intelligence. Insight is your ability to apprehend the inner nature of things. It is your power or act of seeing situations and doing something on it.

  18. INSIGHT

Philosophy is hard to describe. Why? Because philosophizing is something which is easier to do than to define. After philosophizing, you might want to try to define it by yourself.
Every one of us has our own philosophy in life, and most of us associate philosophy with thinking. A crucial element of thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeing what with the mind, it is not all about what our naked eye sees. When somebody gives you a joke, and you laugh, you probably get the point. It is a good thing because seeing the point of a joke is a good example of having a good insight.
Filipino loves to deliver a joke. Some makes the pronunciation very different to make them sound alike. Some mispronounce the word but it introduces a difficulty, so the deliverer should make an effort to bring it sharply, and when listeners laugh, they certainly got the joke.
On the second example, Juan’s grandfather just died at the age of ninety five. There, he saw his grandfather lying in a coffin, not the one who was young and full of vigor and high spirits grandfather that he used to be with. And when he heard his aunt said that his grandfather used to be dashing and quite popular to the ladies, Juan realized that he was exactly like his grandfather when he was still young. Now, he realized every man started to be life full, energetic and full of spirit but sooner or later, these will be taken away from him and he will be died. But in addition to that, man will leave a child who will continue what his journey here on Earth, and who will serve as the new generation of men. What can Juan do with this insight? He can crystallize it in a metaphor. The metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind.
Another example: the insight into the meaning of the number four. We can arrive to the meaning of number four by counting. Suppose that you have a Toyopet, a Mercedes Benz, an Impala and a Volkswagen, with these examples, you can count four cars without any consideration with the color or model or anything, but the point in this example is you arrived in the meaning of number four. Abstraction is involved here. Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insight. When we abstract, we concentrate on one aspect of a thing while prescinding from its other aspects. We prescind when we neither affirm nor deny, we merely disregard.
Now, we can conclude that insight is a kind of seeing, not without eyes but our power of thinking. When we want to clarify things or deepen an insight, we should bear in our mind that we should do something. Insight will help us to understand things clearly; we must think deeply to do it.
When we know how to think and to use our insight properly, we will arrive in philosophizing in the end.

    "Insight"

In this topic by Roque J. Ferriols, SJ. we are able to understand philosophy much better. Given here isn't the actual meaning of philosophy, instead a series of examples and points are shown for us to step by step realize what is the true concept of philosophy.

As we already discuss, philosophy helps us to recognize and understand everything that surrounds us through proper thinking and realization of what is the truth. Generally speaking, philosophy has something to do with our mind.

Using our mind generally means thinking, and one of the crucial element of thinking is this what we called "insight," it is how we see things more clearly through our mind. As an example, getting the point of a joke is used. There will be times that we will get the point and apparently laugh without necessarily trying to think, it is because your mind already starts the process even if the joker isn't finish yet. In contrast, there will be also times that you just couldn't get the point. This can be cause by an incomplete or confusing information that the joker stated, also we can't erase the fact that there are people with poor comprehension or understanding.

Another point will be like this, with insight we can be able to see other things except for the one we think. As we began to think of something, we can't help to picture and imagine it on our mind. What it looks like? What it's doing? and other. Then, automatically our insight may see another thing which can be seen as the same as what we're thinking about. This is like what Juan experienced, he sees himself through his grandfather.

More about insight, with insight we can actually compare things like making a metaphor. The example is that the cycle of the leaves and the cycle of men are compared. With a high level of insight, we can see why a certain thing is being compared and make similar with others. We can begin by thinking their characteristics, is their characteristics alike? Are there really a similarity?

Next will be like this, as the insight being a crucial element of thinking, there is this what we called abstraction that affects our insight. Insights may differ depending on the analysis of the abstractions that we have at the moment, this analysis is called conceptual analysis. Abstractions can simply be the location, our point of view, emotions, mood, and the like. Example given is the way we can count the cars. At one location,we can see all four cars and count them, while at the point of view of a single car, we can only manage to see that specific car and of course can only count it as one.

More importantly, not all insight that we can think is correct. Think of a crime scene as an example. An insight always depends on abstractions, so if the abstractions like the evidences in the crime are all wrong, the developed insight is more likely to be wrong too.

Lastly, insight is merely a perception of things we observe and think about. Whatever the outcome is, it'll lead you to your own reality that may end up being true or false.

    "Insight"

Philosophy is all about thinking to clarify issues and for us to recognize things and helps us to be critical to make a sound and better decisions.

To begin this reflection, I have realized that philosophy is all about thinking and analyzing, and that philosophizing is something that is easier to do than to define. And with this, now I learned that there is a crucial element in thinking, that is the "insight."

When I heard of the word insight, the first thing that comes in my mind is that insight is seeing beyond what you've thought, and it is the kind of seeing, not without eyes, but with our powers of thinking.

Insight is a further realization using the mind, to see the heart or the deepest meaning of one thought, thing, action, etc. As in the example of Juan and his grandfather, Juan did realized that there is a rhythm in a rise and fall of the generations of men. And with this insight, he can crystallize it in a metaphor, and that metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind. As in homer's Iliad, he crystallized his insight in the image of leaves. By contemplating the fall and return of leaves, we are able to understand not only the nature of trees, but also the rising and falling rhythm of the generation of men.

Through this we can see that it isn't all about to think what you have seen, but it is giving a deeper insight and to analyze things from things.

And to sum the things up, I learned this four points. First thing is, when we want to clarify and deepen an insight or to fix it in our minds, we must do something with it. Second is, insight can be explored in many ways, but always remains beyond the reach of our technique. With insight it can lead us to a deeper understanding of things, that is the third one. And lastly, insights can bring us into the very heart of reality and the richness of this insight is the richness of the reality itself.

Everyone is given a chance to speculate like a philosopher who seeks ultimate causes and principles or to moralize. Like all activities, philosophizing is something which is easier to do than to define.

Most of us associate philosophy with thinking in which a crucial element in thinking is insight. Thinking is an instrument of adjustment to the conditions of life whereas insight has something to do with the perception of the inner nature of a thing; intuition. The first example uses the so-called jokes to deepen the analysis and to clarify original insight. Some says “Napaka korni namang jokes nyan! Got no sense at all.” But if we’re goin’ to analyze the point of the jokes, we can say that behind those funny lines, we will be able to become a critical thinker. It helps us to exercise our sense of reasoning.

On the other hand, the second example talks about metaphor rather than statement because it determines most of our philosophical convictions. It is metaphor because one object is likened to another by speaking of it as if it were that other. Just like Juan who gradually begins to realize that his grandfather as a young man was exactly like him. Juan has an insight into the rhythm of rise and fall in the life of the generations of men and he crystallizes his insight in a metaphor. The metaphor sharpens the insight and it’s also fixes in the mind. Another example is in an extended metaphor comparing the sea to a woman. Hemingway writes: '...the old man always thought of (the sea) as feminine and as something that gave or withheld great favors, and if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them. The moon affects her as it does a woman, he thought.' But overall Hemingway's vision and his values are positive and appropriate to all human beings. – From the book The Old man and the Sea.
The third example is all about abstraction. Abstractions usually referring to a general mental capability to reason, solve problems, think abstractly, learn and understand new material and many more. For example, I have two dogs and two cats. It’s not four cars or whatever nor four animals but simply four. To simplify, we must not only abstract from certain aspects of the things we count, but in the end we have to abstract from the things themselves.

Insight is the ability to see clearly & intuitively. If we want to clarify and deepen our insight, we should do something with it. ☺

  23. INSIGHT”
    By Roque J. Ferriols, S.J.

    [Simplified]

We all have a chance to philosophize---a chance to see things deeper, or even in its deepest entirety. Philosophizing is something which is easier to do than to define. As part of the thinking process, there is a crucial element so-called to be as insight which is a kind of seeing with the mind. A good example of insight is seeing the point of a joke. Sometimes, we see the point and laugh, most of the times, we also do not see the point and we are really bewildered.

There are two things that should be considered with regard to an insight:
    1. The insight itself.
    2. What I do with the insight.

Number two is vague so giving examples will make it clear. As continuation of the first example which is seeing the point of a joke, we must ask ourselves a fundamental question regarding insight, “What can I do with my insight into a joke? Simple answer: we can analyze it. As we go along with it, it kills our enjoyment because we are beginning to familiarize ourselves with it. Analyzing it can deepen and clarify our original insight and helps towards a more effective delivery.

    For example:
    Knock. Knock.
    Who’s there?
    Mary Rose.
    Mary Rose who?
Me relos ka ba? Anong oras na?

Upon analysis, Mary Rose and “Me relos” made to sound alike. The joker mispronounces it to bring this non-existing alikeness into existence. In order to make sure that the listener will know that Mary Rose stands for “Me relos”, the joker follows it up with, “Anong oras?” Lastly, to make the point of a joke stand out more sharply, the joker tries to surround the delivery with an atmosphere of atrocious nonchalance.

Another example would be Juan’s insight into the rhythm of rise and fall in the life of generation of men. So, what can Juan do with this insight? Answer: He can crystallize it in a metaphor. Metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind. In this example, the author contemplated the rhythm in the rise and fall in the life of generation of men as in the image of leaves.

“One portion of reality casts light on the other”. Meaning, we are able to understand not only the nature of trees but also the rising and falling rhythm of men through metaphor.

For the third example, the insight into the meaning of number four. There are several approaches we can get from it. First, it can be analyzed into two and two or one and one and one and one. Another approach. “How did we gain this insight into the meaning of the number four?” The answer is by counting. For better understanding, the author gave an example of four cars, the Toyopet, Mercedes Benz, Impala and a Volkswagen. We have to look at them in a special way if we want to count until four. So, we must look at them as cars. If we look on them only from the Toyopet view, we can only count one. Abstraction is involved here It is indeed one of the tools used in the analysis of insights. We abstract when we concentrate on one aspect of a thing while prescinding from its other aspects. We prescind when we merely disregard. But what is the content of the insight into the number four? It is simply “four”. From this, we can say that we must not only abstract from certain aspects of things we count, but in the end we have to abstract from the things themselves. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We can analyze conceptually Juan’s insight in the rise and fall of the men. The generations of men begin with a fund of inexhaustible energy and high spirits. But sooner or later the fund exhausts itself. Yet in the very process of self-exhaustion it begets another generation equipped with the same kind of seemingly inexhaustible energy and high spirits. In conceptual analysis, it is necessary to return to the concrete fullness of the original insight. When this return is made, conceptual analysis can deepen and vitalize insight. When not made, it fossilizes insight.

Insight is a kind of seeing, not without the eyes but with our powers of thinking-we “do something” with it. There are different techniques to do it, like conceptual analysis, metaphor, or weaving a myth to embody insight. Secondly, certain insights are so rich, that they cannot be exhausted by our efforts to clarify them. The effect of this is to make us more keenly aware of its superabundance and puts us into a state of tension between a sense of knowledge and light and sense of ignorance and darkness. Third, insight permeates the process of doing something. Lastly, certain insights resist all our efforts to explore them completely because they bring us into the very heart of reality and that reality is superabundantly rich. Insights’ richness is indeed reality’s richness. THE END.

Insight… I believe that the key to a successful go-over into a simple or difficult topic is to analyze it keenly and whole-heatedly. That’s why we have this innate element in our way of thinking, which are our insights. This is a “do-something process” that always comes when we want to scrutinize things profoundly. For me, there is a simple message that lies in this article, and that is, “We always have a chance to think intensely different kinds of situations as long as we practice philosophizing. Gradually, we see things which are seemingly not there when we first seen it or felt it, or even thought of it. Because of our natural capacity to think abstractly, we intend to go for like thousand miles when we understand the realness of something.”

    Insight

From the introduction, it focuses on giving the chance to philosophize and enhance the sense of understanding in order to learn. The process starts not with giving the definition to be understand rather it provides details to be analyze and comes up into own definition based on the gained insight. So, therefore in this sense, insight is an introspection, an examination of ones own thought. A good example is seeing the point of a joke. If somebody gives a joke and you see the point then, for sure you will laugh. On the other way, if another person was given the same joke but doesn't see the point then, he/she might get confused or bewildered. From this you will realize how hard it is to convey this to one who has missed the point.

There are two things that should be considered with regard to an insight:
    First, the insight itself.
Second, what will you do with the insight.

Item number two is a vague but if you will try to analyze little by little your mind may be enlightened. If you want to deliver the joke to others, your analysis can deepen and clarify your original insight and so help towards a more effective delivery. for the first example which is the "knock-knock" you found out the rhythm between "Mary Rose and me relos" can give you a good delivery but much better if you will use "me reros". You're tend to focus on the rhythm to make your joke listeners' friendly. It is an insight. Then, the next example is Juan conclude that high spirits are not inexhaustible. Sooner or later this high spirits will be exhausted. This is the cycle of the generations of men. They start life full of vigor and high spirits then wither away and die. Therefore, Juan has an insight into the rhythm of rise and fall in the life of the generations of men. Juan can crystallize his insight in a metaphor. Metaphor asserts two things are the same and it transferred a term to something it does not literally apply to. For example, Linda is a gold digger. It doesn't mean that she is a miner of gold but instead she is a social climber. If you get the point, you can also conclude that she is a plastic person (another metaphor) meaning she shows her kindness in front of people who are rich but not with those who are in the lower level or the poor ones. Metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind. It also gives portion of reality. Like in my example, there are really social climber and plastic people that do exist in this world. The insights, rhythm, metaphor and the conclusions are just used to get a point, to examine and to nourished our reasoning ability and it also mirrors the way we look at things. Another is abstraction which is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insights. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis. Therefore, abstraction is under insight. It is a process or result of generalization by reducing the information content of a concept or an observable phenomenon. It retains information which is relevant for a particular purpose.

I believe, this all will help us face life with great understanding and by applying philosophy we can avoid wrong decisions as well as wrong actions.
I am hoping for more learning ahead.

  26. MEECKO N. CAMACHO (BSA-2)

A crucial element in thinking is insight. Insight is a kind of seeing with the mind and it is the ability to see clearly & intuitively. A good example is seeing the point of a joke. A friend gives a joke. Some may see the point and laugh while others may not and is bewildered.

The two things to consider with regard to an insight are the insight itself and what I do with the insight.

    Take this example:
    Knock. Knock
    Who’s there?
    Ice Buko.
    Ice Buko who?
    Nagpagupit ako...oh ano, IceBuko?

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY INSIGHT INTO A JOKE?
I can analyze it. But if I’m only concern with the enjoyment conveyed by the joke, analysis can kill that enjoyment. But if I am to deliver it to others, analysis can deepen and clarify my original insight and so help towards a more effective delivery.

POINTS TO NOTE IN OUR SURVEY OF INSIGHT

    * Insight is a kind of seeing, not without eyes, but with the power of thinking. When we want to clarify and deepen an insight or to fix it in our minds, we “do something” with it.
    - Two techniques for doing something with an insight:
    * METAPHOR
The rise and fall in the life of the generations of man can be developed into a metaphor, which is the fall and return of leaves. This metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind.
    * CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS
The insight into the meaning of the number four can be two and two or one and one and one and one. But, there are dangers to the use of conceptual analysis – it can shrink an insight. For example, I have 4 different cars – Car A, Car B, Car C, and Car D. If I want to count until four, i must look on them as cars, but if I’m going to look on them from Car A viewpoint, I can only count one.

    * There are many ways of doing something with an insight which shows that certain insights are so rich that they cannot be exhausted by efforts to clarify them.

    - We have our own meaning for all things and we understand things only within the reach of our knowledge because everyone has his/her limits but actually if we can look deeply into it we can see a “vague image” which represents a meaning out of our reach. We may explore insights in many ways and along different levels, but some superabundance of the original insight always remains beyond the reach of our techniques.

    - The effect of doing something with this kind of insight is making us more keenly aware of its superabundance. Hence this puts us in state of tension between a sense of knowledge and light and a sense of ignorance and darkness... the things we know and understand and things that are out of our sight.

    * Insight permeates the process of doing something with an insight.
    - We must not focus into the physical or material features of things but more on its formal features. Insight is needed to see whether a given conceptual analysis of a given insight explore deeply into it instead of simply classifying its superficial aspects. Also, we must search for what is essential with regard to our insight.

    - Example... We need insight to see that the contemplation of the fall and return of leaves does lead to deeper understanding death and birth of generations.

    * Insights bring us into the heart of reality and reality is superabundantly rich, the reason why certain insights oppose all efforts to explore them completely.
    - We cannot go beyond the define body of knowledge because there are some things which are unexplainable and abundantly rich. The richness of these insights then is the richness of reality itself.

    - Example... “The Creation of the World”
    - We believe that God created us, all things we see and the universe but there are some theories like Big Bang Theory that explains how we exist. We believe on Divine Creation but we still have lots of question that we cannot understand. We accept and continuously believe on Divine Creation without seeking answers to our limitless questions.

    INSIGHT!

From this assessment of insight, I have gained some insight into the nature of insight. It is a kind of seeing with our power of thinking. When we want to clarify and deepen an insight we do “something” with it and it has two techniques: conceptual analysis and metaphor or others to weave a myth to embody our insight.

The second point is that there are many ways of doing something with an insight which shows that certain insights are so rich that hey cannot be exhausted. Some super abundance of the original insight always remains beyond the reach of our techniques. Doing something with this kind of insight makes us more keenly aware of its superabundance. Hence, this puts us into a state of tension between a sense of knowledge and a light and a sense of ignorance and darkness.

Third point notes that insight permeates the process of doing something with an insight. We need insight to see that the contemplation of the fall and return of leaves does lead to a deeper understanding of death and birth of generations. We need insight to see whether a given conceptual analysis of a given insight thus probe deeply into it instead of merely classifying its superficial aspects.

Lastly, insights bring us to the very heart reality which is superabundantly rich. The richness of these insights then is the richness of reality itself. And the stance of human being facing the reality has always to be a tension between a sense of knowledge and sense of ignorance.

    “INSIGHT”
    By Roque J. Ferriols, S.J.

In this article, Ferriols gives four examples in order to clarify to the readers what is the meaning of insight and to have better understanding on it. Here are the following examples given by the author:

    1. Seeing the point of the joke
    > If you see the point of the joke then you may laugh and if not then you may puzzled. The joker may accuse you of pretending to see a point that it is not there. But you know quite definitely that there was a point, so you will keep on thinking. Sometimes, analysis can kill enjoyment. In fact, analysis can deepen and clarify one’s original insight if the joke will deliver to others.

    2. Using metaphor
    > Metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in mind. You better understand the one portion of reality cast light by another. In addition of it, by using symbolism, it expands the imagination of the thinker. He used to think what is the better explanation or interpretation on the metaphor he utilized.

    3. Using abstraction
    > Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of the insight. Abstract is used when we concentrate on one aspect of a thing while presiding from its other aspects. Generally, we must not only abstract from certain aspects of the things we count, but in the end we have to abstract from the things themselves.

    4. Showing one of the dangers of conceptual analysis: it can dry out an insight.
    >After conceptual analysis, it is necessary to return to the concrete fullness of the original insight. If it is happened (return to the concrete is made), conceptual analysis can deepen and vitalize insight and if it is not, conceptual analysis fossilizes insight.

He mentioned that his purpose on writing this article is not to define the philosophy but instead to teach us on how to philosophize – and insight is part of it.

From this, we have gained some insight into the nature of insight. It is a crucial element in thinking. It is kind of seeing with the mind. When we want to clarify and deepen an insight or to fix it in our minds, we “do something” with it. We have seen two techniques for doing something with an insight: conceptual analysis and metaphor.

As what the article says, there are many ways of doing something with an insight. Indeed, I learned it from this article! It shows that certain insights are so rich that they cannot be exhausted by our efforts to clarify them. We may explore them in many ways and along different levels, but some superabundance of the original insight always remains. It also puts us into a state of tension between a sense of knowledge and light and sense of ignorance and darkness.

Lastly, we need insight in order to see the thought, significance and the relation of all things around us if it affects or will affect us.

  30. "INSIGHT"
    By Roque J. Ferriols, SJ.
Philosophizing is something which is easier to do than to define. After you have begun to engage in this activity, you might want to try to define it yourself.
Insight is a crucial element of thinking. It is also a kind of seeing with the mind. A good example is seeing the point of a joke. A friend gives you a joke. You see the point and you laugh. Somebody else does not see the point and is bewildered. He might accuse you of pretending to see a point that is not there. But you know quite definitely that there was a point, and you saw it. You are glad to be alive and able to see the point. At the same time you realize how hard it is to convey all this to one who has missed the point
Two things should be considered with regard to an insight. First is the insight itself and the second one is what I do with the insight.
    Take this example:
    Knock knock.
    Who`s there?
    CIVIL
    Civil who?
    CIVIL-liar ang tunay na mahirap,
CIVIL-liar ang tunay na may malasakit

Upon analysis I discover that the point of the joke is this: "si Villar" and "Civil-liar" sound very different, yet they are made to sound alike.

The metaphor sharpens the insight and fixes it in the mind. Also, one portion of reality casts light on another.

Abstraction is one of the tools often used in the analysis of insights. An abstract thought is called a concept and analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis by abstraction is called conceptual analysis.

This last example shows one of the dangers of conceptual analysis: it can desiccate an insight. The throbbing, tumultuous generations of men become an abstract fund of energy and high spirits. That is why it is necessary after conceptual analysis, to return to the concrete fullness of the original insight. When this return is not made, conceptual analysis fossilizes insight.

From this brief survey of insight, we have gained some insight into the nature of insight. It is a kind of seeing, not without eyes (though our eyes often play very important role in it) but with our powers of thinking. When we want to clarify and deepen an insight or to fix it in our minds, we "do something" with it.
